News of the Day 26/01/12

Fox has ordered Cougar Town (and Scrubs) helmer Bill Lawrence’s semi-autobiographical comedy Like Father to pilot.

Hot for fairy-tales after the success of Once Upon a Time, ABC plans to reboot Beauty and the Beast.

NBC is considering a spinoff of The Office. The central character? Dwight Schrute, of course.

The man responsible for the voice of the robot in the 1960s series Lost in Space, Dick Tufeld, has died.

In more pilot news, Gilmore Girls co-producer Jennie Snyder Urman (also of Gossip Girl) will be producing a medical ‘dramedy’ for The CW. Dan Jinks, of Pushing Daisies, will serve as Executive Producer.

Marg Helgenberger has, after twelve seasons, officially ended her tenure at CSI. In other CSI related news, CBS has ordered to pilot Executive Producer Carol Mendelsohn’s new detective drama Widow Detective.

After what has been the worst season this far of The Office how can anyway honestly believe that a spin-off is a good idea?

    • Alexeem Boyle

I assume that with NBC’s many comedies imploding or with low ratings- and with The Office winding down- they’re hoping to build on the popularity of Dwight to create a solid ratings winner. I doubt it’ll work (too much Dwight could be infuriating), but if done right, it’d go well with Parks and Rec (providing it sticks around Schrute Farm).
I haven’t watched The Office since S5, but maybe a new setting and cast would be good for Dwight?

      • Dave

That makes sense… I’d like to believe it could work ala Frasier and be as successful and long running as it’s original show and I hate to be the internet critic who instantly poo-poos ideas simply because they sound stupid but I really have no idea what that show would look like even if they did stay more at Schrute farms… Although your suggestion that it would look a little Parks and Rec-ish sounds incredible.
