News of the Day 23/03/12

Political Animals will soon have a respected thespian in its midst. Ciaran Hinds (There Will Be Blood, Munich, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, HBO’s Rome) has joined the likes of Sigourney Weaver, Carla Gugino and James Wolk in the six-episode series from Greg Berlanti and USA Network.

Hugh Dancy (Black Hawk Down, King Arthur, Martha Marcy May Marlene) has landed a co-starring role in NBC and Bryan Fuller’s Hannibal, portraying an FBI agent mentored by Hannibal Lecter.
Lost‘s Maggie Grace has signed on to Kevin Williamson’s (The Vampire Diaries, Scream) new “serial killer drama,” opposite Kevin Bacon and James Purefoy.
30 Rock will do another live episode on April 26.
SyFy has opted not to move forward with Battlestar Gallactica: Blood and Chrome, which will likely become a web series.
NBC has renewed Smash for a second season, but will return with a new showrunner after the departure of Theresa Rebeck. She will remain an executive producer and writer, but will not manage daily operations.
The Office showrunner Paul Lieberstein is stepping down to focus on the Dwight Schrute spinoff The Farm. No word yet on who will replace Lieberstein.
Another new addition to Downton Abbey comes in the form of Eragon star Ed Speleers.

Jennifer Beals and Paula Marshall (Gary Unmarried, Californication) have signed on to CSI executive producer Carol Mendelsohn’s drama pilot Widow Detective, with John Corbett in the title role.
